The Flower as a Symbol of the Self
(1) A flower may symbolize what Carl Jung referred to as ‘the Self’—the true self that represents the fundamental order and beauty of the psyche. In Eastern mystic-meditative traditions, particularly Taoist and Zen Buddhist practices, meditating on a flower is recommended as a means of promoting inner healing.
Imbalance and the Asymmetrical Flower
(2) An asymmetrical flower—for example, one with a petal much larger than the others or where the center is off-balance—may indicate a lack of balance in your psyche. In both southern Asian yoga systems and the Western esoteric tradition, flowers represent the psychic centers referred to as chakras (“wheels”).
The expression “spiritual unfoldment” is a flowerrelated image. Finally, the dreaming mind often literalizes common verbal expressions—such as “wallflower” and “flower power”—in an effort to convey something to the conscious mind.
